Alkoomi Wines

Near half a century ago in 1971, Merv and Judy Lange started Alkoomi Winery, with only a single hectare of land to their name, since then Alkoomi have blossomed into one of the largest family owned wineries in Western Australia. Now run by Merv and Judy’s daughter Sandy Hallett and her husband Rod, Alkoomi are one of the leading lights in Western Australian wine, producing a range of premium wines that showcase the very best of what the Frankland River region has to offer.

Under Sandy and Rod’s stewardship, Alkoomi have strongly committed to minimising the environmental impact of the winery. To this effect they have invested in 30kw solar panel to provide a sustainable source of electricity, and implemented a policy of wall-to-wall grass to control weed growth without use of harmful pesticides.

Here at Villeneuve Wines we are proud to be Alkoomi’s UK importer. Our relationship with Alkoomi started in 2017 when Kenneth Vannan visited the winery on a research trip to Western Australia, and left highly impressed with both their wines and their philosophy. We are not alone in our appreciation of these wines, James Halliday, Australia’s leading wine critic has said of Alkoomi “(they are an) outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity.”

Alkoomi White Label

Alkoomi White Label at Villeneuve Wines

The White Label range offers unbeatable value for wines in a range of clearly defined styles. Of the whites in this range we stock a well balanced Chardonnay, as well as a classic Australian Semillion/Sauvignon Blanc blend and dry Riesling which have both received 92 points from James Halliday. When it comes to reds, the Cabernet/Merlot blend offers a rich and ripe palate brimming with cassis notes, whilst the Shiraz is mature and well structured with a spicy backbone. There is also a pale and delicate Petit Verdot Rosé and Late Harvest blend which offers sweetness with refreshing acidity.

The Black Label range are serious, premium quality wines, ready for drinking now, but with significant cellaring potential. The Black Label Malbec, made partially with grapes from one of the original 1971 blocks of vines, is chewy and complex, whilst the Shiraz/Viognier blend is deep and dark, but with an underlying freshness.

For those after the very best of what Western Australia has to offer, there is the Alkoomi Icon’s range. This range includes the Melaleuca Riesling, a single block wine produced without use of fining agents and aged on the lees to give a rich, textural complexity. There is also the Wandoo Semillon, a partially barrel aged wine with the potential to age and develop over the next ten years and Blackbutt, a cool climate Shiraz with balanced acidity and elegant tannins.
